(I-AutoNewsWire.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- A convenience store in the suburban Des Moines city of Bondurant sold a winning $202 million Powerball ticket. It remained unclaimed for days after the drawing. It is usually encouraged for people to consult with an attorney or financial planner prior to coming forward, so a slight delay in naming a winner wasn’t unexpected. Iowa Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer said that,
“This amount, $200 million, is a life-changing amount of money, and we want to make sure the winner is prepared for what will come.”
She went on to mention how Iowa winners tend to do just that, and take their time before stepping forward, which is why it can take a few weeks to name a winner.
This prize was the second huge Powerball jackpot sold in Iowa this year of which they require a public disclosure of winners’ names. A small group of 20 employees of Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids ended up winning and sharing $241 million when their numbers came up in a June Powerball jackpot drawing.
That ticket ended up being Powerball’s 15th-largest national jackpot. The $202 million jackpot placed at 28th amongst U.S. lottery winnings. The largest prizes awarded from a jackpot winning was a $656 million Mega Millions drawing sold back in March. That winning ended up being split up three different ways in states Kansas, Illinois and Maryland.
The winning ticket, per lottery officials, was sold at the Casey’s General Store in Bondurant. This store sells upwards of $200 worth of tickets per day. They have had a lot of foot traffic since the winning ticket, of people checking their tickets in hopes of the lucky numbers. Besides this large jackpot winner, another ticket of $1 million was sold at a Casey’s store in the eastern Iowa city of Williamsburg.
The rise in price of the Powerball tickets happened in January. Prices went from $1 per line to $2 per line, and the prizes were then appropriately adjusted which resulted in more frequent high dollar winning tickets. Although the jackpot amounts have risen since this change, the Powerball sales decreased more than 10%.
