(I-AutoNewsWire.com, April 19, 2013 ) Langford, Canada -- Four major Japanese automakers are now recalling 3.4 million vehicles that have been sold across the globe due to airbags supplied by the Takata Corporation having a risk of catching fire or injuring passengers.
The move was announced on Thursday in what is the largest recall for airbags make by Takata. The company is the world's second-largest supplier of airbags and seatbelts. A subsequent 10% drop in Takata stock prices was experienced immediately following.
The recall, which also included vehicles from the Honda and Mazda corporations, is the largest since a 7-million vehicle recall from Toyota in October. The scale of both recent safety actions underscores what is the risk of global supply chains experiencing problems as automakers increase their reliance on a handful of suppliers for common parts in order to gain profit.
In the latest Takata recall, the airbag for the front passenger seat had malfunctions where it would not inflate correctly due to a defect in manufacturing. According to the company, the propellant used in the airbag inflator misfired, and there is a risk of fires starting or of passengers being injured by fragments shooting up to the windshield. Subsequent damage out the windshield during a crash can then assist in the total damaging of the windshield itself, heightening the risks of injury.
The recall now covers some of the top-selling Japanese cars, including Toyota's Camry and Corolla, as well as rivals like Nissan and Honda. All the vehicles in question were created after 2000. None of the affected Camry’s were sold in the United States, according to the companies.
“The huge recall is expected to generate a good deal of unwelcome attention, particularly for Toyota, as it strives to rebuild its reputation for quality in North America,” IHS Automotive analyst Paul Newton said in a report.
