(I-AutoNewsWire.com, August 03, 2013 ) Marietta, GA -- David Cole, who serves as the chairman emeritus for the Center of Automotive Research, has worked in the automotive industry his entire career. Now that he’s retired, he’s started AutoHarvest.org, a nonprofit Amazon.com for intellectual property on the automotive industry.
AutoHarvest is a secure website for inventors and manufacturers to get together and establish a meeting to help connect intellectual property connect with buyers and sellers. So far, it’s just now getting cranked up in the beta stage and only a few users are currently on the site.
As the auto industry has done a lot of its own research and development, they’ve been traditionally known to shy away from work that’s been done outside of the industry, but now they’re less reluctant to deal with intellectual property on the outside, and that’s why Cole is eager to see what’s going on to take place on his website.
As for the Detroit Three automakers, Cole said entry level jobs at $14 to $15 an hour is the new pinnacle for autoworkers. When someone at a higher wage level retires, a person in the lower tier moves up into that position, earning higher wages. Basically, the automakers have an extremely competitive market going on right now, from a $2,000 cost penalty against foreign competitors to a $2,000 cost advantage.
As for driverless cars, Cole doesn’t expect to see them around anytime soon due to legal issues and the problem of meshing them with the existing fleet of manned vehicles. What he does think drivers will see more of will be supplements that benefit the driver, such as adaptive cruise control, which is already a feature in some higher-end luxury models.
