(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 07, 2012 ) Hartford, CT -- Three years into its life, the BMW X6 sport activity coupe is getting a refresh, set to receive a revised exterior and an available M Performance Package. Scheduled to reach BMW dealerships this spring, the 2013 X6 mimics the look and performance of a sport coupe while maintaining the utility of an SUV, featuring nearly 60 cubic-feet of cargo space.
BMW didnÂ’t hold back in the mid-cycle refresh of the X6, the sleekest member of an X lineup that also includes the popular BMW X3. The automakerÂ’s engineers added new technology like optional adaptive LED headlights, which maintain BMWÂ’s trademark twin rings but use highly efficient and bright light-emitting diodes in place of the standard Xenon bulbs. BMWÂ’s stylists also went to work on tweaking the exterior of the vehicle, adding a bolder grille and revising the front fascia to more closely match the new 3 Series and 5 Series.
“The devil is in the details, and BMW is famous for its attention to the specifics that elevate an automobile above its competition,” said Tim Parker, general manager of Hartford, Connecticut BMW dealer New Country BMW. “The new X6 blurs the line between a sport coupe and an SUV better than ever before, thanks to new styling cues from BMW’s best-selling cars and available power boosts for the engines.”
With an M Performance Package planned for both the 2013 X6 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive50i, BMW is bridging the gap between the standard X6 and the all-powerful X6 M. The M Performance models will not only feature a boost in horsepower, but also bolder styling, including unique 20-inch alloy wheels and optional Carbon Black metallic paint.
The X6 xDrive35i jumps up 15 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque with the M Performance Package, increasing its output to 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the X6 xDrive50i with the M Performance option gets an increase of 40 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque over the standard model, reaching 440 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Despite those power boosts, the separate X6 M remains the top dog in the X6 lineup, using the same engine as the iconic M5 super sedan. The M5, which is currently only available in Europe, will deliver 560 horsepower when it arrives in the U.S. this summer as a 2013 model.
BMW is also ramping up the performance of the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant that assembles the X6 and other X models. The Bavarian automaker plans to invest nearly $900 million in the plant during the next three years, creating 300 new jobs by the end of this year. The investment will help meet demand as X models gain in both popularity and variety; the lineup will expand further with the new BMW X4 compact crossover SUV due in 2014.
“The popularity of the BMW X family means more well-paying jobs for Americans during a time when we need jobs the most,” Parker noted. “Connecticut BMW fans can buy an X6 knowing that they are not only getting a superior vehicle, but that their money is going toward providing jobs for Americans. That’s an important thing to keep in mind.”
