(I-AutoNewsWire.com, September 11, 2012 ) Austin,Texas -- The Texas Department of Transportation has released a report with troubling findings for many Texas residents. Although traffic-related fatalities in the state have decreased by nearly 15% since 2006, the state is still the 16th most dangerous for drivers (http://www.statesman.com/news/local/texas-traffic-fatality-rate-dips-still-above-national-2431402.html).
Doug Shupe, who is a spokesman for the AAA Texas, gave an interview to Austin’s The Statesman newspaper, on the subject of traffic related deaths in the state. According to Shupe, the number of road deaths in Texas and around the country are too high, and often the result of human behavior that can be corrected.
"Drinking and driving, distracted driving, speeding, red-light running, drowsy driving and not wearing seat belts are among the most common factors for traffic fatalities in the state and the nation," Shupe told The Statesman. "Although we may be moving in the right direction in some areas, there are still far too many people dying on our roadways."
The audit conducted by the Department of Transportation showed that in 2010, the most recently reported on year, the state of Texas saw 3,028 traffic-related deaths.
“We have seen a decline in traffic-related fatalities across the board in recent years,” said Claudia Green, of Fast and Stress Free Traffic School, based in Austin Texas. “Despite the decline, the numbers are still too high, and Texas is among the highest in the nation. That’s a scary statistic, especially when many of the driving errors that lead to deaths can be so easily prevented.”
The Fast and Stress Free Traffic School offers online defensive driving courses for drivers in Texas. According to the transportation department’s audit, the number of Texas traffic fatalities equates to about 1.29 deaths per 100 million miles driven in Texas. The national average equates to 1.11 per 100 million miles driven.
“A lot of the decline we’ve seen in fatalities is because of factors such as better safety features on cars and stricter enforcement of laws regarding driving under the influence, but education is the best way to continue the downward trend,” said Greene. “A lot of people just aren’t aware of the behavior they may engage in while driving that is risky and can lead to death. Lowering traffic fatalities isn’t just about enforcement of the laws, but it’s also about increasing driver awareness and knowledge, to reduce the amount of human error that occurs while drivers are behind the wheel.”
“Our customers of our defensive driving course are generally people who have received a minor traffic citation and are court-ordered to take the course, but in the end, they don’t realize that receiving a minor citation is a good wake-up call to take their time behind the wheel more seriously, before it’s too late,” said Greene.
