(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 19, 2012 ) Wilmington, NC -- Just one glance at a Smart car makes clear that it is not the car for all. After all, it only seats two and looks like something Mr. Bean might drive assuming he had some money.
But, for singles and couples looking for a fuel efficient vehicle to zip around town in, a Smart car could be just right. In fact, when they were first released in 2008, they enjoyed great sales. Unfortunately, since then, sales only fallen until now no more than three thousand of them are sold a year.
Trying to recapture the initial success of the Smart car, its parent company, Mercedes-Benz, is releasing a redesigned 2013 Smart ForTwo. Again, although the upgrades should please many, this type of car is still not for everyone.
The front of the diminutive car has a lower grille that is also wider. And while the gas-powered model's powertrain is unchanged from the previous model, the 2013 Smart Electric Drive model will come with an entirely new electric powertrain. This new motor is more powerful, being able to whine out 74 horsepower at a peak power rating of 55 kilowatts. Its sustained rating is 47 hp (35 kw). This may not seem like much, but when one remembers that the darn thing weighs a little more than a full grocery cart, it becomes clear that it is more than powerful enough.
The rumor is that the electric drive model will be priced below $26,000.
